Humble Rants 30 July 2014

by Robert Skoglund aka The humble Farmer

I don't know much about this war. Some people in Gaza shoot a rocket into Israel. Israel shoots two rockets back into Gaza.

It could only stop if someone finally took the initiative and turned the other cheek. But it might be hard to do that if everyone in your family were killed by an enemy rocket. This was the great thing about the war in Iraq: every time you'd kill someone, you'd automatically turn half a dozen of the victim's relatives into crazy "insurgents" or "terrorists" who would give you that many more excuses to keep your profitable war machine going.

As someone who has always enjoyed reading the Bible, I know that God often commands His people to take a city and kill every living person in it. So can anyone who trusts in God be condemned for carrying out His commandments?

You've been to Israel and have seen small pipes sticking up out of the ground where houses were razed and the inhabitants evacuated. Civilized humanitarians don't kill the dregs of society but simply round them up and ship them off to a reservation or camp.

Religion has always served as a backup plan for the warrior class: if greed for money or lust for your neighbor's land can't inspire you to take up the sword, wiping out the infidels usually can. In other words, defending the word of God is an infallible, perennial and forgivable excuse for killing your neighbors.

As long as people are willing to die for their country or religion, can you see any end of it? When was the last time you saw a Finnish license plate inscribed with "Live Free Or Die"?
