Humble Rants 18 February 2014

Note friend humble's new photo with rhubarb.

by Robert Skoglund aka The humble Farmer

Here's friend Robert who writes in the New Maine Times: "And after all this downtime, It's amazing that Robert Skoglund doesn't look a day over fifty two."

Robert is talking about the Janice Lang photo that heads my column on these pages. Janice works for National Geographic Canada and has a camera that can see your nose hairs (so she told me) at 600 feet. She can also take a picture of a man who is over 70 and he will look like he is 50.

It's in the art and the technology. Knowing how to handle light and angles, I guess. If you want to see what I look like today through my own camera, catch my television program which I make weekly.

This month I've noticed the kind of bags starting under my eyes that you're only likely to see in a public radio program manager. Luckily, at 78 I won't have too much more time to preen before mirrors.

Not to detract from Janice's formidable camera skills, but please remember that I do look younger than I should because I never drank or smoked. And I tried to stay out of the sun.

--- Not to be ignored in the why-does-he-look-younger equation are the 51 years I spent as a single man.
Of course, the number one reason I do not look as haggard, dragged-out and beaten as a man my age should is that I could never afford to have children.
