Maine House votes in favor of GMO labeling

by Gina Hamilton

AUGUSTA -- The Maine House took the first baby step toward labeling of genetically modified organisms on Tuesday by passing L.D. 718, a bill sponsored by Rep. Lance Harvell, R-Farmington, and co-sponsored by more than a hundred other representatives from both parties as well as independents.  The bill passed in a landslide vote, but is likely to face a lawsuit if it is enacted.

The amended bill, if passed by the Senate and enacted, only goes into effect when five other contiguous states pass GMO legislation.
