LePage wants to take $1 million from public schools for charter school legal fund

by Gina Hamilton

AUGUSTA -- Gov. Paul LePage announced that he would like to take a million dollars from the state public school fund and set it aside to provide legal assistance to people who are serving on the charter school commission.

The proposal is part of the governor's $6.3 billion biennial budget.  It would divert funds from the general education fund which funds school districts statewide.

It is meeting with significant opposition, both from the Maine Teachers' Association, as well as Democratic legislators.

LePage also has proposed diverting $300,000 from the Attorney General's Office to the governor's office for legal cases in which the attorney general declines to represent the state.
