Humble Rants 22 February 2012

by Robert Skoglund aka The humble Farmer

We read that Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. said: "I like to pay taxes. With them I buy civilization."

For a long time I've been aware that the higher the taxes in a country, the higher the standard of living.

Taxes are low in parts of Africa where people sit around on street corners cooking over rubber tires. I have a distant cousin who was well paid to work for an oil company in Africa. He wrote detailed descriptions of what he saw and how he had an armed guard to take him to work in a compound that had high walls.

Taxes are high in countries like Sweden and Denmark. But it comes back because people there have teeth and can afford to take month-long vacations and own summer homes.

Do Republicans really want 99 percent of Americans to live under conditions that resemble those found in Nigeria?

It was a rhetorical question — it's pretty clear.

The humble Farmer can be heard Saturdays at 5 on WERU Blue Hill,  Sundays at 7 on WRFR in Rockland and Tuesdays at 2 on WMPG Portland.
