Humble Rants 18 January 2012

by Robert Skoglund aka The humble Farmer

With the George W. Bush tax breaks now in place for the rich and the tax breaks for the rich understandably proposed by Mitt Romney, which are even better for the rich, one can easily understand why our local millionaires would support the Republican Party.

But from what I've seen in Knox County, the few middle-class Republicans left in this nation appear to be older people who were Republicans 60 or 70 years ago — back when Republicans were well to the left of where so-called Democrats are today.

And these good old folks simply aren't aware that what they still call the Republican Party abandoned their you-can-do-it-too-if-you-work-hard-and-save values long ago.

Their unlettered children and grandchildren might call themselves Republicans for no other reason than that their venerable old patriarch calls himself a Republican.

There probably isn't one of them who knows that in the early '40s patriotic Americans were shooting at and dropping bombs on people with the values of the Republican Party of today.

And because they're friends of mine I'm not going to tell them.

The humble Farmer can be heard Saturdays at 5 on WERU Blue Hill, Sundays at 7 on WRFR in Rockland and Tuesdays at 2 on WMPG Portland.
