Runners in the storm

by Steve Cartwright

PORT CLYDE — Seventy runners competed in a limited-entry half-marathon on Aug. 28 in St. George, running a loop from Blueberry Cove to Port Clyde, Marshall Point Lighthouse, and back to a blueberry brunch. Hurricane Irene didn't stop them, and a 13-year-old girl, Willow Parker, took third place overall. Everyone completed the course, and Blueberry Cove Camp, which Willow attended, received more than $5,000 to help children have a wonderful summer experience. The race itself turned into a warm and celebratory experience. Organizers hope this will be the first of many annual benefit half-marathons for Blueberry Cove.

Jon Downing, camp director at Blueberry Cove, blows the conch to start the race.

And the race begins!

Willow Parker, camper at Blueberry Cove, prepares for the race.

The winner gets a lovely trophy ...

but there was pie for everybody.  Blueberry, of course.

The triumphant racers come home.

Halfway home!
