Humble Rants 27 April 2011

Did you read that letter to the editor from the fellow who says that Maine has too much government?

I've never thought about this before, but I don't think I've ever visited or lived in a country that had too much government.

I've lived in a country that had a government that looked out for the interests of the super-rich instead of working people.

And I've lived in a country that looked out for the well-being of small employers and working people instead of the super-rich.

Neither country had too much government.

But in one of those countries everyone had good health care, good jobs, good homes, good cars, good vacations and good retirements.

In the other country war profiteers siphoned off about half of everything that the country could borrow or take in in taxes. Besides owning the war industry, the super-rich people in that country owned the media, which encouraged frustrated small business owners to squabble among themselves, call each other names, and blame too much government for their problems – which was the epitome of irony because the rich bought that government and paid it to do exactly what it was doing.

So when you hear someone say that there is too much government, don't you have to wonder if they really mean something else?
